The island of Spinalonga, officially known as Kalydon, is located in the Gulf of Elounda in north-eastern Crete. The island has been used as a leper colony in the 20th century. During the fifty four years of the colony , roughly faur hundred people lived there. But there is more to the island than the misery of this terrible illness. It’s modern history dates back over 8 centuries. Acquired from the Byzantine Empire at the start of the 1200s it became a crucial part of the Venetian power base on Crete, for the next 400 years. Huge fortifications still domainate this small but strategically important outcrop of rock. Today, the intriguing and atmospheric Island of Spinalonga attracts a great many visitors from all over the world.
