The largest island of the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia is a very picturesque place. Mostly famous for the exotic beaches, including Myrtos, Antisamos, Lourdas and Skala, the island was chosen for filming the Hollywood movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Kefalonia’s indented coastline is made up of limestone cliffs, bays and short strips of white sand, like Myrtos Beach in the north. Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow twisting roads. Apart from swimming, Kefalonia offers many interesting places to see, from picturesque villages to Medieval castles and beautiful monasteries; some of the spectacular places here are Lapeta, Melissani, Mirtos and Petani.
